My name is Jan de Boer, professor of BioInterface Science at BME and I am developing the USE learning line “Digital Twin in Healthcare together with my colleagues from the TU/e departments of Biomedical Engineering (BME), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Industrial Engineering and Innovation Science (IE & IS), and the faculty of Medicine at the UMC Utrecht.
This USE LL aims to teach engineers about the role of technology in the healthcare system, the impact of technology on patients, and the role of the engineer in this ecosystem. Digital Twins are the scaffolds on which we build a curriculum.
We use a modular approach. Each module is based on a clinical case which is organized by a case owner, who is a TU/e teacher who brings in her/his favorite digital twin topic. We already have several cases, for example, atrial fibrillation, metabolic profiling in diabetes, scoliosis surgery and medical imaging using catheters. However, we are actively recruiting case owners. Each case owner brings along a clinical liaison, a company liaison and organizes the tutors needed to run the USE case. Challenge-based learning (CBL) is our main teaching strategy.
The USE LL comprises of three modules, each of 5 ECTS: Conceiving, Designing and Operating/Implementing. Each module has a responsible teacher. The conceiving phase is coordinated by Burcu Gumuscu (BME) who will design the learning methods to bring the pieces of the puzzle to the students, the stake holders, the technology, and the medical problem. The Operating/Implementation phase is coordinated by Wybo Houkes (IE & IS) who will show the students how a digital twin can be used off campus: with patients, in hospitals, and as part of a company portfolio.
For the second phase of this USE LL (Designing phase) we are looking for a responsible teacher with a background in the data science of Digital Twins, with experience in modeling, machine learning, AI, and databases. A creative thinker who can link her/his expertise to coordinate the data science of the clinical cases in collaboration with the case owners and the responsible teachers of the Conceiving and Operating/Implementing phase.
USE LL Digital Twin in Healthcare received a grant from the Educational Innovation fund, and we have recruited a full-time project manager for the duration of two years to support the USE LL in the development of the educational material. Innovation Space is also involved in the development of the curriculum. In the first year, this learning line will receive 100 students, but we expect to grow in the future. Revenues of teaching are proportionally distributed among the departments.
